Shoujhen Temple is the largest temple in the Alishan area, restored in 1969. The main gods worshiped here are the Syuantian Emperor, the Fude God and the Jhusheng Goddess.
On the 3rd day of the 3rd month of the lunar calendar, it comes a week before Syuantian Emperor’s birthday and the breeding season for Alishan Kuciouluowun Butterflies. This type of butterflies are palm sized, as wide as 15 ceilometers with wings spread out, and there are organized waved black-eye-like stripes on their wings. During then, thick smoke and lights in the temple attract butterflies to linger inside the hall and around the divine elephants. They do not fly and eat until the Syuantian Emperor’s birthday. Therefore, Local people call them “Divine Butterflies” and believe the divine butterflies dance for the Syuantian Emperor at the time every year. The story and the unusual scene often attract so many people to come to watch the Shoujhen temple that the temple is very prosperous.
