Fong-Shan Ecological District occupies an area about 10 hectares, boasting more than 100 plant species. The district’s main purpose is not to spoil natural environment and emphasize the natural ecology; as a consequence, there are a large number of creatures inhabiting here, including fireflies from March to April, as well as rhino beetles and butterflies flying in the night in June and July. There’s also a fish pool surrounded by mahogany tree. At dusk, the breeze blows down leaves from mahogany trees as well as eucalyptus trees which have stood there for more than 100 years. All these views are against the background of sunset. The scenery is spectacular.
Many special plants, flower and fruits are also planted in this district. One among them which originates from Brazil is called Jabuticaba, or Brazilian grape tree. It is a kind of evergreen plants and fruits twice a year in fall and spring. Its fruits are big, round and sweet measuring 13-17 degrees Brix. The fruits can also be used in making wine, the concentration of which can measure up to 48%, spreading a special aroma of grapes. Due to the rarity of Brazilian grape trees in Taiwan, they are easy to be mistaken as normal grapes if they are seen outside to orchard. But they taste sweet and smell fragrant, which makes them totally different from normal grapes. Brazilian grapes are not only refreshing and delicious but also rich in nutrients. Besides the Brazilian grape tree, inside Fong-Shan Ecological District there are also many tropical plants such as rambutan from southeast Asia, moringa trees from India, olives from Pacific Island, guavas from Mauritius, calliandra flowers, etc. In order to develop the tourism industry and leisure agriculture, the future goal for the district is to become an original plantation ecological district.
