Jhaoping Park is located at an elevation of 2274 meters above sea level, and it has the broadest view to see Alishan’s cherry blossoms. When you get off the Alishan small Hiking Train at Jhaoping Station, you will see the Jhaoping Nature Park. You may even see the Alishan Mountains in a far distance from the highest spot in the park.
The Jhaoping Park used to be a wood-chopping village established by Alishan Jhongjheng Village citizens. As more and more visitors come here, it becomes the busiest shopping and hotel street. However, a big fire in winter 1976 burned out more than 100 houses and the whole Jhaoping business district. After then, the Forestry Affair Bureau restored the place and made it the Jhaoping Park. Because of that fire, almost all the cherry trees in the park are planted again. They are not as old as 70-or-80-year-old cherry trees in other scenic spots, but their density is the highest among those. There are about 600 of them in the park, so it becomes the most crowded place to see cherry blossoms.
Jhaoping Park is a big park with many kinds of high mountain plants with all types of Alishan flowers. People come here to see blossoms almost at anytime of the year. Besides of the popular spring cherry blossoms, there are still quite a few camellia blossoms, hydrangea blossoms, forestry azalea blossoms, yellow aroma blossoms, string-hanging cherry-apple tree, etc. Even though all the mountain cherry blossoms withered, there are often some late cherry blossoms coming out quietly. Jhaoping is also a good place to watch birds. The layout of the park is very poetry: trails, small bridges, and small steam trains passing through now and then. The environmental restoration is very successful and worth a visit.
