The Alishan Zhushan Sun-Watching Platform was built after the famous Zhushan Sun-Watching Building got destroyed in the Earthquake 921 and torn down, with an elevation of as high as 2500 meters above sea level.
In order to go with the Alishan Forest Recreation Park style, the Forestry Administration Department built two octagon pavilions here with traditional architectural methods. Not a single nail is used in the pavilions. The supporting poles are made of Chinese cypress wood, plus the Chinese-style encaustic tiles and granite tables, the pavilions become a classic specialty in Zhushan. In addition to these two primitive wooden pavilions, on the new Sun-Watching Platform Square there are an electronic clock showing the sunrise time and a very detailed sunrise diagram. All stations along the Forest Railway are inlaid and shown on the floor. At the center of the new Sun-Watching Platform, there is a round granitetable with solar sculptures showing the 24 season festivals of the lunar year and the direction signs. The graph is installed with light-conducting cable to radiate colorful rosy lights under sunrise, very beautiful.
On the Zhushan Sun-Watching Platform you can not only see the famous Alishan sunrise and cloud sea, but also can you see a touching night scene around the corner in front of the platform if you come at night. Events like New Year Concerts are held on the platform sometimes, so it’s becoming an important activity landscape in Alishan.

If you want to take off for the Sun-Watching Platform when it is still dark to catch
sunrise, it is recommended to bring flash lights while walking to be safe, despite
there are street lights.
Drive :Chungshan Highway: Exit at Chiayi→159 County Highway to go to Chiayi City →
Go on Tai 18 Province Highway (Shihsian Rd., Wufong South Rd.) then go on
Alishan Highway to go up to the mountains → Pass Chukou, Longmei, Longtou,
Shihjhuo and keep going then you will arrive there.
2. The South 2nd Highway: Exit at Jhongpu → Towards Chukou, connect to
Alishan Highway to go up to the mountains → Pass Chukou, Longmei, Longtou,
Shihjhuo and keep going then you will arrive there.
PS. Since you get off the Highway, there will be signs of the Forest Recreation
Park along the way until the main entrance of the Forest Recreation Park. The
distance is 75 kilometers.
Mass Transportation : Ride the Chiayi County Bus at Chiayi Train Station, the Alishan Line, get off at the
last stop and you are there.
Ride Guoguang Bus at Chiayi Train Station going to Alishan.
Ride small train of the Alishan Forest, get off at Jhaoping Station and you are
there.
PS. Mass transportation here doesn’t run often. It is recommended to look up
their schedules first before you take off.
