Beautiful blue sea and sky, fishy smell in the air, fish feeding ponds, and oyster racks are Dongshih Village's local scenery and typical fishing village scenes. The name of “Dongshih” was given by the Huang Sheng brothers after they came from Dongshih, Jinjiang County, Cyuanjhou to Taiwan in the years of Kang Si (in the Cing Dynasty). They saw lush bushes of Avicennia trees, birds singing, monkeys playing, and a rainbow in the sky often right above the ocean, so they decided to settle down and live here. They called the new land “Dongshih”, in memory of their hometown.
After Taiwan joined WTO (the World Trading Organization), the traditional fishing industry needs a structural change towards the trend of “recreational fishing industry”. It is expected that after the practice of three directs (direct mail, direct flight, and direct cruise) between Taiwan and China, there will be a serious impact from China's cheap agriculture products. Therefore, the Taiwan government is determined to help the agriculture industry and the fishing industry to transform towards “recreational agriculture and fishing business” to help release the difficulties the fishing industry is going to encounter. They took advantage of the special scenery and industry as a fishing port to make Dongshih Fishing Port a multi-purpose “Fisherman's Wharf”, a tourist attraction.
Dongshih Fisherman's Wharf is programmed to reveal different faces of the ocean-- the “wind”, the “sunshine”, the “fish”, the “boats”, the “sea” and the “light house”-- to restore its Holland style as an entrance. It is designed to be a special tourist attraction with a theme to revive local economy. Its fresh fish products, beautiful sunset, and other resources are all good tourism selling points. The special theme includes its harbor view, unique culture, the recreational activities and the natural ecological resources. So far Dongshih Fisherman's Wharf's major infrastructures include the Ocean Culture Hall, the Special Products Hall, the Shop Street, the Sea-Watching Pavilion, the Floating-Bridge Market, and the Coast Walking Platform. They combine its original fishing port values to provide multi-functional services.
Walking into Dongshih Fisherman's Wharf, you will see Holland-styled Windmills. When strolling on the bank underneath the streets at sunset, you will see dragging nets, oyster sheds, floating woods and other decoration artworks. They show the unique custom and culture of the coast. There are beaches where you can pile up sand and play in water with your families. You can fly kites in the grass field or ride bicycles, enjoying leisure and comfortable time; or you can just stand on the View-Watching Platform to enjoy the mild breeze blowing from the sea and appreciate the famous Dongshih sunset. The beauty of the water and sky, all in one color, is really stunning.
If you pay a visit to Dongshih Fisherman's Wharf, you can experience a fishing village's culture. You can enjoy a view of the sunset at the entrance of Puzih River and a delicious seafood feast at any restaurants. It is suitable for friends and families to go about together. |
