A cost in Taiwan for most everyday consumer items is on a par with Western countries, though a few things are noticeably cheaper. It's not easy to say just how much you should budget for your daily living expenses during your visit, but it would be pretty hard to do much traveling on NT$1000 per day. More likely, you should be prepared to spend NT$3000 per day. Hotels are usually the biggest single expense, so you could easily spend more if you require a high standard of luxury. If you decide to rent a car as opposed to using public transportation, that will also push the bill still higher.
Tipping is not really a custom in Taiwan. Even waitresses and taxi drivers do not expect tips, and you'd be well-advised not to start a new trend. An exception is for porters (bellhops) at international hotels, who expect NT$100 minimum for moving your bags, and perhaps a little more if you've got a lot of luggage. The same could be said for the porters (skycaps) at the airport.
In some Asian countries, intense haggling over prices is the norm. In Taiwan, this is not an acceptable practice. As a general rule, in shops where items carry fixed price tags, there is little chance of negotiating a better price. There can sometimes be bargaining in night markets, but it's important to keep it brief and polite. There may also be some latitude for bargaining hotel room prices, especially on weekdays when guests are scarce, but again, politeness is imperative.
Changing money is a bit of a hassle. The private money changers so common in Southeast Asia are non-existent in Taiwan, and only a few (five-star) hotels offer a money changing service for their guests. However, it's very easy to change money at the two international airports.
There are domestic ATM machines which only work with local cards, so to use these you'll have to open an account in NT$. If you wish to do this, all you really need is your passport and some contact address in Taiwan - it is not necessary to be a legal resident. Almost every bank can issue an ATM card that will work in any ATM around the island. |
