The town of Dalin rewards careful exploration and thoughtful observation. There's a lot of interesting architecture here – not just traditional Taiwanese styles, but also buildings that show that the aesthetic influence of the Japanese colonial era, which lasted from 1895 and 1945, reached even into the smallest urban centers.
Out in the fields, you'll see rice, and - where it is hilly - bamboo. Dalin is well known for the quantity and quality of its various bamboo products.
In recent years, much of Dalin's development has come about because of Buddhist organizations. Nanhua University, in the southeastern part of the township, is a Buddhist school; and the Tzu Chi Dalin General Hospital - the largest and most sophisticated healthcare facility for some distance around - was established by Taiwan's leading Buddhist charity. |
