It's a shame that most visitors to Budai visit only the well-known Tourist Fish Market, eat and/or buy seafood, and then head home. The township has much more to offer: There are some interesting temples, quaint inland villages that have nothing to do with either fishing or salt production (formerly an important industry), and an excellent nature reserve.
The Haomeiliao Nature Preserve occupies a spit of land that faces the port of Budai. Containing fragments of a once much larger mangrove forest, it is especially rich in unusual plants and certain crab species. Eco-tourists should bring their field guides and binoculars (and, for some of the smaller crabs, a magnifying glass). Even if you're not a hardcore naturalist, the accessibility of these creatures makes a visit to Haomeiliao a rewarding and memorable experience. |
