Puzih is officially a city, but the number of inhabitants has yet to reach 40,000 - one eighth of Chiayi City’s population. Lacking both coastline and mountains, it's perhaps no surprise that the attractions here are manmade.
Puzih is rich in folk shrines, ranging from the popular yet timeworn Peitian Temple, to the elegant peacefulness of the Gaoming Temple. It's also an especially good place to see life as it is lived in a small Taiwanese town. Stroll along the main streets, and browse the markets: you'll see duck-meat vendors, physicians who make up and sell their own herbal remedies, craftsmen who make or repair farming tools; plus computer stores, Internet cafes, cell-phone company offices, and small eateries run by "foreign brides" - women from Southeast Asia married to Taiwanese men. |
