Singang Rural Township, which borders Yunlin County to the north, is a must-visit for anyone interested in Taiwan's spiritual life, in particular the cult of Mazu.
The Fongtian Temple in the downtown, and the Shueisian Temple near the Beigang River, are the two main religious attractions. At the time of writing, the former was undergoing renovation, and the latter has not been renovated for decades. To see the stunning impact of a successful renovation, visit the Dasing Temple, which is a stone's throw from the Fongtian Temple.
Whereas much of Chiayi County is suitable for exploring by car or motorcycle, the temples in Singang do sometimes attract so many pilgrims that driving is not advisable. Fortunately, the bus service is very good. The new high-speed railroad passes through the western part of the township, but no station is planned: Chiayi's only stop will be in Taibao City. |
